I have finally got to Koh Tao in Thailand after two weeks of travel in New Zealand and three days in Bangkok. Some of my friends from Ireland are managing Spicy Tao backpackers, so I am staying there for my time on the island. It is a really laid back hostel and a proper Thai experience staying here.
The trip to get here was a bit of a long one as the train did not arrive in time so I had to wait a few hours at the port, but it is worth it when you get to the island. Koh Tao is one of my favourite places in the world. The first day consisted of a chilled out morning hanging around the lounge area getting to know everyone staying in the hostel then we decided to take a ride to Tanote Bay on the other side of the island to go snorkelling.
The drive takes about 20 minutes and the road becomes quite dangerous towards the end. The water damage makes it a real challenge, requiring you to hang on to the brakes for dear life while driving in and out of water channels on the way down.
After the white-knuckle ride, you arrive on of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in Thailand. The area is famous for the giant rock which you can jump off and the great coral reef for snorkelling.
There is a little bar and shop on the beach to rent snorkel gear for 50THB $1.60 or you can grab a coconut or mango smoothie for 40THB.
After we checked out Jah Bar and sat around there listening to some reggae before heading back to the hostel. It was a great first day in Koh Tao and my first underwater GoPro video.
